I was shocked to learn about the ways in which the Native Americans social
determinants of health have shaped their poor health outcomes today. As some of the
poorest people in America, Native Americans rely on government funded food
programs which provide the people with sugar ladened and calorically dense
commodity foods. Without the funds or means to drive an hour round trip to a grocery
store that has fresh produce and healthy foods, the people have to rely on the
unhealthy commodity foods which ultimately leads to high rates of diabetes.

why some people have worse health outcomes than others.
I thought that with a good doctor, and access to healthcare you could live a
primarily healthy life. Health is not just determined by how good your doctor is, but
rather it is determined by the social factors around you. Issues that arise in health,
such as diabetes among the Native Americans, can be blamed on the poor social
determinants of health that create barriers to access to healthy foods and safe places to
exercise. To address the issue of diabetes policy and social changes need to occur,
rather than just fixing the already sick with medication.

An important takeaway that can be learned from the IAT and the
video is that it is dire that America supports these vulnerable populations
like the Native Americans so that they are not marginalized. This starts with
attempting to eliminate implicit biases towards Native Americans. This can
be applied to my professional life as a public health major. In my future
career I can study the health outcomes of these impoverished populations to
make change and ensure they have equitable access to services that allow
their health to prosper.

What are some social determinants of health that shape your health as a
student at UVM?
1. What struck me about this video was the alarming rates of Type II Diabetes
this population experiences. Type II Diabetes can be well managed when you
have the sources but not everyone can have these sources. One shocking
thing was the fact that they had one store in that many Native Americans
need and use, and is an hour round trip to make. Like the episode stated, if
one does not have the right foods to consume, it will increase the likelihood of
developing diabetes or making the condition worse. This knowledge affects
me because it makes me realize how much I take food markets for granted,
knowing I have like four different ones I can travel to in a matter of minutes
when I think I need something.
2. What challenged my views this episode was that I always connected Native
Americans of being one with the land, but little did I know, that the land they
did use and helped them remain healthy was no longer in their control and
had to resort to little markets, and long distance traveling, and causing a
never ending cycle of this battle with type II diabetes in this population.
3. My test results did not comply to what I thought I would receive. It stated
that I see Native American as foreigners, and although I do not believe that of
myself, I understand why those were my results. Growing up I didn’t have
many native Americans living around me if any, and still don’t to this day. I
never was brought up learning much about Native Americans other than what
you learn in high school history classes. This episode really brought my
attention how little I know about Native Americans and how much I need to
learn if I want to become a competent nurse in my future.
How can society incorporate not only knowledge of Native Americans, but all
different cultures to educate individuals, and bring awareness to poor health
outcomes due to economics?
