Delta Airlines Social Performance
Delta Airlines is a major airline company in the United States of America and within the
International air markets. It offers services relating to flight and airplane operations. Flight and
flight related services form the primary service provided, but it also engages in the refinery of
fuel jet and provision of maintenance and repair services on third parties. As an international
carrier, its business operations are affected by different external factors at the national and
international levels. Its primary stakeholders, however, have the leverage to propel the company
towards profit-making and financial improvements. The firm can adopt strategies such as
facilitating alliances, driving effective customer service, driving total vertical integration,
fostering favorable operating models, and ensuring effective marketing campaigns. The
operations of the company have given rise to different matters that have brought controversy in
the firm’s corporate social responsibility role. This controversial CSR is majorly in
environmental pollution. The company has fallen victim to air, sound, and water pollution within
its regions of operations. Delta Airlines can be regarded to have strong primary stakeholders who
have the leverage to propel its financial position in both the flight services and fuel refinery. This
is amid different effecting external factors and various controversial issues relating to its
corporate social responsibility.
Nature, Structure, And Types of Services and Products Offered
Delta airlines form one of the major United States airlines, and it has established a strong
legacy in air carriage. It offers flight services to different regions globally, and it currently works
within a well-established network of over 300 destinations, which are widely located in over 50
countries (Bush, 2016). These flight operation destinations include both domestic and

international flights. The company also engages its industrial operations in the refining industry,
where it focuses on the provision of jet fuel. This fuel is for different airline segments in the
industry. The company also offers other services in the airline industry, including repair and
maintenance services for third parties. This wide range of services and products helps the airline
to maximize on its operations in the flight and airline industry.
External Environment
An analysis of the external environment affecting the company points out political and
legal factors as primary concern facing the aviation industry. President Donald Trump has
several imposed travels bans to and from different regions, thereby causing a lot of havoc and
loss of revenue to airlines. There are also different levels of regulations and sanctions that have
been imposed by the administration that actively acts as a potential cut of revenue. The American
government has also been engaged in different political conflicts with various countries,
especially Asian countries. Such conflicts heavily affect international business. Similarly, the
economic recession in different economies affects the operations and services by airlines
(McKenna, E. (2018). Traveling is a luxury, and when depressions and recessions hit the
economy, airline companies are the first to feel the blow. People typically cut down their
expenditure and do away with elements such as traveling during such hard-economic times.
Influence by Primary Stakeholders
Primary stakeholders are vital in influencing the financial position and offering economic
leverage to a company. One of the strategies that can be adopted by the employees and the
investors in the Delta is a facilitating the realization of alliances with other air travel companies.

This will enable the firm to extend its services at lower financial costs. Such facilitation will
allow acquiring of a more extensive global coverage in flight services. Alliances can be
facilitated with other different regional airlines thus helping Delta expand its operations to
different zones. Alliances also bring in cost-sharing in the shared activities. Secondly, the
primary stakeholders can change and alter the company’s business model in line with changing
economic times (Davidson, Newes, Schwab & Vimmerstedt, 2014). Changing of operating
models helps in catering for periods of recession and peak seasons. This will help the company
leverage in economic gaining activities and cut down operations that have lesser returns. This
offers the organization an avenue to check and evaluate tactics that are of value as per the
operating environment.
Additionally, the management should work towards facilitating an effective and robust
marketing campaign. This helps keep the company’s name within the customers’ minds. Being
one of the oldest airlines in the U.S, the company has a better chance of maintaining a strong
reputation within the customer’s eye. The fourth factor that can be considered in this case is
focusing on a reliable customer service facilitated by the company employees. This includes
maximum attention, which will ensure that consumers are offered with first-class services and
they get full satisfaction with the services being offered. This can serve as a strong attraction
point to different kinds of clients. The airline should also facilitate efficiency in booking and
obtaining service by promoting the online e booking and making it easy to catch a flight by the
airline. More customer satisfaction reflects high customer return rates, referrals, and an increased
number of flights. This also reflects on the profit margins of the company. The fifth factor is
facilitating a full vertical integration on the jet fuel that they produce (Almansur, Megginson &
Pugachev, 2018). This will see all Delta airline planes use the jet fuel that the company produces.

Such efforts will facilitate saving of millions of cash that can further be used to fund other
endeavors. Vertical integration also helps in promoting a reduction of operations costs and
maximization of profits.
Controversial Corporate Social Responsibility
Delta Airlines has a corporate social responsibility towards maintaining a clean and safe
environment within its operations. However, this has actively grown as a controversial issue as
its operations have continually led to environmental pollution. For instance, airline operations
have created noise, thus affecting the quality of life for people living near airports. Consequently,
there is a lot of wastes that gets out of the airports and its refinery in the form of runoff water.
The company has minimally addressed this, leading to negative impacts in the water ecosystem.
Delta Airlines also contributes to substantial levels of air pollution by the creation and release of
smog from the fuel refinery and by the release of gaseous emissions by the planes in their
operations route (Seo, Moon & Lee, 2015). The effect of these gaseous products is intense as it
leads to acidic rain and is a contributing factor towards global warming. This remains
controversial as the company has done less in addressing the issue. The national laws on
pollutions have also minimally addressed different levels of contaminations emerging from
airports and airlines.
Conclusion
With a concentration in offering flight services, third party maintenance services, and
refinery of jet fuel, Delta Airlines has a good range of services and products to offer in the
market. It also has a wide range of primary stakeholders such as suppliers, customers,

employees, and investors who play different roles in facilitating a robust financial position for
the giant airline player. The adoption of various policies and different kinds of facilitation is of
value in the realization of this position. It is also of importance for the company to address the
concern of pollution that has grown to be a controversial factor in its CSR. The company owes
its operating environment and society the responsibility to maintain and work towards
minimizing different levels of pollution. It also of value for the federal government and different
environmental bodies to enforce stringent laws concerning environmental pollution.
