the government had been maliciously obtaining personal data held by companies. The citizen
complained of the insufficiency in personal data held by private and public organizations in
the USA following the claim that Cambridge Analytica assessed Facebook users’ data.
Cambridge is a data analysis company in American, and most people expect it to protect their
data privacy. However, some reports have revealed that US authorities have been obtaining
individuals personal data without their consent. The human watch claimed that the authorities
failed to show defendants of criminal cases where the intelligence authorities obtain their
data.
In January 2018, Congress passed section 702 of the foreign intelligence surveillance
act, which allowed the body to access citizens’ data without obtaining a warranty (Swire,
Woo, & Desai, 2019). The congress also adopted laws that allow the government to demand
data from US companies under unaccepted rights standards. The laws have forced many data
collecting agencies to share individuals’ personal data without their consent. Public concern
about how personal data of Facebook users was obtained by Cambridge Analytica has
propelled the citizens to question the ability of data privacy law in America. The government
policies and law amendments have reduced the power of the organizations in protecting
individuals’ personal data. Today, the American government can obtain citizens’ private data
about their religion, political support, ethnicity, sexuality, and race through organizations
without their consent.
It is not right for the government to force any organization to reveal the private data of
its clients since it is unethical. Every citizen has the right to feel safe that their private data
has been protected by the organizations that they trust. The government does not have any
right to access any database that contains private details of citizens without their consent.
There is a lot of reasons why the government should adopt policies that do not force
companies to reveal individuals’ private data information. One of the leading reasons is that
companies sign commitments to protect their clients’ confidentiality. Confidentiality is one of
the core values of the information security of many organizations. Protecting individuals’
privacy is necessary for helping the company to gain trust from their clients. Giving
someone’s private information without their consent is a breaching of the organizations’
confidentiality.
Furthermore, organizations should not be forced to provide private information of an
individual since it will breach their integrity. An individual’s private data should also be
protected from any form of modification, whether accidental or intentional. The integrity of a
company is also breached if an individual can change their personal information such as
salary in the payroll database. The government should not enact any law that allows any
individual to access individuals’ database.
Individuals have the right to access their database information anytime they want and
change any information they want to change. However, many companies have been limited by
law to give citizens the chance to change their personal information. The law should be
flexible to address the changes that occur in someone’s personal life in society. For instance,
couples might divorce each other hence it is their right to update their bio as from married to
single. Individuals must feel that their data is always available whenever they need them.
Precisely, government policies should only posse positive policies that protect the integrity of
the information security of companies. Enacting laws that limit the companies from
adequately safeguard the confidentiality of individuals will make the company lose their
clients’ trust.
There has always been a concern of someone listening to phone conversations or
breaching data anonymously. Still, consumers usually look at it as a flaw that is
used “on other people.” The WhatsApp created through FaceBook Freeware is
easy to use, enable video calling, and can send documents to individuals across
the globe. Unfortunately, hackers are using the tool to gather information and
breach the database with the end-to-end encryption, which should mean those
who send or receive them and cannot be intercepted along the way could only
read messages. (O’Sullivan, 2019) The target audiences are politicians or high
profile individuals that could be intercepted to affect communities in the political
arena or government agency.
Cybersecurity experts expressed concern that highly sensitive government
communications could be at risk of exploitation by foreign governments and
hackers. (O’Sullivan, 2019) I agree with the cybersecurity experts’ concern
because adversaries in the form of hackers or insiders could breach the United
States military. The FaceBook mobile communication is a great tool and
platform for discussion, but computer viruses can be detrimental. Policies and
standards are enforced to reduce malicious code connectivity, individual
behavior, and other unwarranted downloads or practices.
