hello i have case study for my business for more information pleaze see the attached fileCase Study: Financial Indicators and Analysis
NOTE:
Students will use the analysis described below instead of the textbook Item 4 on page
529. They are, however, encouraged to use the text’s explanation and analysis framework
under “Calculating Financial Ratios” on pg 529 and continuing onto pg 530.
For This Assignment:
•
For this portion of the Case Study, you will use the instruction sheet
at How_To_Download_SEC_Financial_Data_into_Excel_Spreadsheets_120511.doc
to download at least 3 selected years of financial data from your selected company ((my
selection is Walmart )) . You will use this data to perform an executive-level review and
analysis of the company’s status.
Overview
This is like the real world where, as part of job interviews, executive and senior management
candidates may be given access to company financials and the CEO, CFO and/or board of
directors may ask the candidate questions as to what they see in the financials and what
would they do to improve the company’s standing.
For your project, the years you choose should be guided by your prior research which
indicated the challenges of the company. So, if the company went through some difficult
times during the 2007 recession, you might look at a financial snapshot from 2004 and
another from 2008 or 2009 to see the impact of the down cycle in the business environment.
Or, if their operations underwent a significant overhaul in 2014, snapshots might be taken
back in 2012 (before) and again in 2017 (after) to see what the effects were on the balance
sheet, the income statement and the return on capital investments.
As an additional consideration, if one of the challenges you found was your company has
lagging sales performance relative to its industry rivals, a smart action on your part would be
to look up the data for at least one sample year of the rival, choosing also the data for the
same year for your company to give an “apples-to-apples” comparison financial data for
comparison.
This comparison would show how a competitor organization in the same economic
environment was able to perform, relative to your selected company.
Assignment Deliverables:
•
Students will upload for this assignment an Excel workbook with the financial
data formatted for ease of viewing and indicate via cell color or other formatting
techniques those financial indicators and/or trends of interest to the company’s strategic
challenges. Indicators could be in the areas of financing such as leverage, inventory,
operational costs, or marketing-related such as declines in sales, etc.
•
•
Graphs/charts requirement: from data in the bullet above, students will isolate key
factors such as cost of goods sold , net profit, long-term debt or other factors affecting
financial performance and graphically show how the strategic issue they discovered
shows up in a financial or operational measure.
•
•
Students will also include a 1-2 page Word document summarizing briefly their initial
findings from the previous “historical and current challenges assignment”, then explain
the key findings from this financial review and make sure to reference specific evidence
from the Excel document you will be uploading.
How To Download SEC Financial Data into Excel Spreadsheets
There are two ways to pull financial data, in Excel format, from the SEC site
(http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml), depending on how recent the information is.
OPTION 1: For filings that are a year or two old
•
Go to www.sec.gov.
o In the Filings & Forms box click on Search for Company Filings.
o Then click on Company or fund name, ticker symbol, CIK (Central Index Key), file
number, state, country, or SIC (Standard Industrial Classification).
o Enter either a company name or ticker symbol into the appropriate box. (Note: I find it
easier to use a ticker symbol because you guarantee you have the right company.)
Choose Find Companies.
o
o
On the next screen you can select the appropriate filing or filter by filing type (10-K).
Newer filings have two button options: Documents and Interactive Data. Select
Interactive Data, if that is a choice.

o
Once in Interactive Data, select financial statements. This will bring a drop-down box on
the left-hand column. Select the statement that you want. Then click View Excel
Document above the left-hand column.

OPTION 2: For older filings
•
Follow Option 1 steps to get to the company filing screen. Since Interactive Data will not be
available, click on Documents.
o There will be a number of options. Find the link containing the full filing. This is usually
the first link but not always. For a 10-K filing look for a link titled 10-K.
•
Open Excel. Click on the Data tab in the ribbon and select From Web, the second icon from the
left.
o A web browser will open up. Copy the link from the company 10-K and insert it into the
New Web Query browser that opened up. Click Go to be taken to the filing. (Note: The
browser sometimes runs slow.)
o Find the financial tables you wish to import. Above the tables you should see a yellow
box with a black arrow point to the right. Click on each box corresponding with each
financial table that you wish to import. The box will turn green with a check mark.
o Once all desired tables are selected, click the Import button at the bottom right of the
web browser.
o You will be taken back into the Excel spreadsheet with an Import Data box open. To
import the data, select either a cell in the existing worksheet or New Worksheet and
click OK.
o Data will be uploaded into Excel. Please note that this process does a poor job of
formatting the tables. Brackets indicating negativity and currency symbols are often
placed in adjacent cells requiring manual entry. For year-over-year analysis across
multiple filings be careful to ensure that financial sheet items line up with one another.
