Response Papers
Each student will be required to submit one response paper during the course of the semester. All
the term papers are due on . A list of due dates for the presentations (see next section) will be
posted on Blackboard by about the second week of class. Jan 27 (no class) has been set aside so
that students can make their own paper selection after literature survey.
The topic of the paper should be connected to the material scheduled to be covered in class on your
submission date. To prepare your response paper, choose a materials-related topic and locate at
least two references (journal article, reference book, etc.) that is related to the topic. The reference
cannot be our textbook or one of the reference texts listed on the first page of the syllabus (but
these can be used to supplement the information). Please write a 3-page (1” margin, single-spaced,
12-point font) summary of the reference, and how it relates to concepts in class (please see rubric
for details). If you have any questions that were raised by the reference (or related textbook
readings) include those as well. Complete citations for any resources you use to write the paper
must be included at the end. Example of a complete citation:
“Name of the paper”, Author, Journal Name, Volume (Year) page numbers.
Note that the source of an item such as a journal article is the journal in which the piece was
published, not the database from which the article was retrieved.
Submit the first page of the main outside reference along with your response paper.
Your response paper must be based on a peer-reviewed outside reference. Two good sources
of peer-reviewed references are the SCOPUS and Engineering Village databases. Examples of
sources generally not considered peer-reviewed include (but are not limited to) websites,
newspaper articles, popular magazine articles and marketing materials. Papers based on nonpeer-reviewed sources may be returned without a grade.
Your response papers will be graded on grammar, spelling, formatting and technical content (see
attached grading rubric). No late response papers will be accepted.
Response Paper Presentations
On the designated date, you will be expected to give a short (5 minute) presentation on the topic
of your response paper. You are expected to prepare 5-7 Powerpoint slides (not including the title
slide) related to the topic to serve as visual aids for the presentation. The first slide (after the title
slide) should give a brief personal introduction (where you are from, professional interests, etc.)
with the remaining slides dedicated to the main topic. Professional dress is expected. You will
submit hard-copies of the slides (they can be black and white). You will also submit 2 potential
exam questions and answers from material that you discuss during your presentation. The
instructors will select a number of the response topic test questions for exams and the final exam.
Please see the response paper presentation grading rubric on the following page.
DEDP students – you are expected to prepare a presentation following the same format as the oncampus students. You can upload your video presentation in Yuja or youtube. The questions (and
answers) for your submitted questions should be available on your slides.
