My perspective has changed!
My perspective of the Doctor of Strategic Leadership (DSL) degree has changed over the last
few weeks but that reflects my increased understanding of the program. Previous to now my
opinion of the DSL program was more around obtaining an education that will help me
understand organizations, how they behave and ways to drive successful change. Fast forward to
today and I now believe that the DSL program is so much more than
that.
The DSL brings God into the picture and puts him in the center stage. This has not always been
the case in my life, but renewed interest and curiosity sparked by the DSL program is a
welcomed change. Originally my understanding was that this pursuit would be an individual one
with a lot of independent studies. However, the different discussions within the discussion board
bring diversity and offer a unique perspective. Providing a perception that this program is not an
individual venture, but one that is shared with a cohort of
people.
An interesting spin on the discussion forum may be the concept of a dynamic learning group that
uses modeling to bring learners together as opposed to randomly or by class
attendance. According to Prabhakar and Zaiane, there are heterogeneity and homogeneity
aspects to consider (p. 129). In the end, it is about student collaboration and learning from one
another.
Initially, I began this course tackling the discussion board on Wednesdays and then beginning
the American Psychological Association (APA) work on Friday night. This behavior forced me
to spend my entire Saturday and Sunday just reading and writing. This ultimately led to
submitting subpar work due to time constraints and minimal proofreading.
Proofreading is critical to the success of a paper and care should be taken to edit
accurately. Zaman (2018) mentioned that taking a break from proofreading was essential as well
(p. 7). For me, the only way to take a break from proofreading is to start the process sooner and
work it into a daily activity instead of a Sunday afternoon marathon. As I recognized the time
constraints and appreciated the workload, I changed my
behavior.
That included initiating both, the discussion board work as well as the APA effort, at the same
time and at the beginning of the week. This confidently brought a better version of the material I
submitted. Bundle that change with other time management improvements like taking advantage
of breaks at work and downloading material prior to my cross-country flights also raised the bar
on my submissions. There are further opportunities for improvement comprising of the online
writing support center as well as the prayer discussion forum.
Continuing through the program will uncover other important concepts that I will learn to
appreciate. One that I am especially excited about is the relationship with my mentor and what
potential that connection has. I’m not limiting myself to a single mentor and will keep the door
open for others, but I am joyful that one has been discovered this early in the program. I could
almost consider it a form of discipleship. Reminds me of the instruction we receive in
Corinthians, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (11:1, New International
Version).
If I do need to make changes in my personal life to enable learning during the DSL program,
then I’ll probably quit the adult soccer team I play on or possibly cut out television time and
scrolling through my internet feed. I envision plenty of places to either trim wasted time or
systematically expand the attention I apply to the DSL program.

Sproul : Week 8 DSL Perspective
COLLAPSE
When it came to the Doctor of Leadership (DSL) program at Liberty University (LU), I did not
know what to expect. I just finished up my master’s only weeks prior to starting this program. I
used to think that there was a lot of writing for my masters, but now in comparison, that was very
easy, even my final capstone. The program has been great so far, and I would only say that the
amount of writing is the only thing that changed my view of the program. Now the reading
required reading materials have been great, and I have really enjoyed reading Merida (2015) and
learning about the different leadership styles, mentorships, among many other great things that
took place since the creation of time. When I talk to others outside of the program and they
listen to the amount of work that has been getting assigned, they are thankful that they never
enrolled in such a program. On the other hand, I do view this as a blessing to be in the position I
am in and was given. We may have many rough times, but God promised us many things and
said, “so do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen
you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10, New
International Version). Our focus will be on these promises!
There have been many things that I have learned during this term, such as the information
provided in the reading materials, but also a big one was my ability to write and handle the
amount of work that was required each week. Another was the correct way to format the
different assignments, especially when it came to the understanding of the American
Psychological Association (APA) format. I never knew the APA format consisted of so many
variations. Sometimes it is hard to grasp certain format requirements, and the quizzes that were
part of this term were more complicated than I was anticipating.
When it comes to different takeaways from this term, I would say the three most important
things that stick out would be the following:
•
•
•
Types of leadership styles
How I can change as a leader and as a servant
To walk more in “Christlikeness” (Merida, 2015, p.19, para.5)
The things we do inside and outside of work all relate to each other in the end. How we
act, how we treat people, and things we do to make a dent in this world. No matter the types of
people we come across, we need to be the ones that step up and act and come together as
Christians to help lay down a good foundation and help others. I had many major events on the
personal front to deal with during this whole term, and my scheduling has been off track. In the
future, I would like to plan and work ahead on projects to free up some of my time. The overall
method I used was based on my past coursework for my master’s. I like to glance over the
assignments in advance and try to understand the amount of time it would require week by
week. The problem is my mindset. Sometimes your brain just flows, and other times it may be
hard to think, so sometimes it is hard to plan out a situation till you are in it. Going forward, I
would like to break up large projects and tackle them week by week rather than all within seven
days. Again, it all will depend on what life throws at us. No matter what, we will get through it!
