Detail
1. Annotated bibliography
Students will review the current and past literature on a topic related to their formal essay and prepare an
annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is a list of sources of information about a research
question which includes a description and evaluation of each source.
In the submitted work you must:

Clearly state the topic you are researching, and include a brief statement as to the context of the
references you have chosen.

Include at least four (4) journal articles, books, book chapters or web sites that are of relevance to the
topic you are researching. These should be the ones you consider the most relevant, so you should
have reviewed at least twice this many

The length of the annotation will depend on why it has been included and on the nature of the source
itself. Typically annotations are between 50 and 100 words each.

Remember to evaluate each annotation critically.

Present your annotations in alphabetical order.
An example of a completed Annotated Bibliography will be shown in class.

explanation as to why it was selected
 Harvard referencing attempted but with a number of errors. The annotations
are neatly presented
 Competent
 A good selection of sources with an adequate rationale for each selection
 Harvard referencing with only minor errors in formatting
 Comprehensive and detailed
 Well chosen sources with very good reasoning underpinning each selection
 Correct Harvard referencing is used for each heading. Each annotation is
well written and well formatted
 Outstanding
 Annotations represent the eminent authors within the field; the student has
constructed a well developed and comprehensive rationale for their selection
 Correct Harvard referencing is used for each heading. Each annotation is
exceptionally well written, well punctuated and presented perfectly.

WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?
An annotated bibliography provides a brief account of the available research
on a given topic. It is a list of research sources that includes concise
descriptions and evaluations of each source.
(from https://student.unsw.edu.au/annotated‐bibliography)
It is highly recommended you visit this or any other relevant website.
Studiosity also offers specific help on completing an annotated bibliography.
The annotation usually contains a brief summary of content and a short
analysis or evaluation. Depending on your assignment you may be asked to
reflect, summarise, critique, evaluate or analyse the source.
The annotation may:

be included as part of a larger paper

describe the contents and form of the book or article

suggest the source’s usefulness to your research

record your reactions to the source
Each annotation should be concise. Do not write too much—remember, you
are writing a summary, not an essay. Annotations should not extend beyond
one paragraph unless otherwise stipulated in your assignment guidelines. As
this is not an extended piece of writing, only mention significant and relevant
details.
Remember to:

Summarise the central theme and scope of the book or article.

Evaluate the authority or background of the author.

Compare or contrast the book or article with other works you have cited.

Explain how this source relates to your topic.
The next page has a few examples of what an annotated bibliography may
look like. Most annotations are between 100 – 200 words, but as the
annotations will form the basis of a relatively short 500 word essay – it is
acceptable for each one to be between 75 – 150 words in this instance/
Note, that the word count is not required in your annotated bibliography.
McFarlane, J.K. (2015). Standards of care—what do we mean by care? Nursing
Mirror. 143(23), 40–42.
The article examines the meaning of the word ‘care’ within a nursing context.
The responsibility of nurses to provide care is legitimised in numerous
documents, and the author goes on to identify key concepts related to nursing
care. Moreover, the nurse’s caring role is legitimised by the patients. Finally,
the article concludes by relating how these concepts are put into operation by
using the steps of the nursing process. The main limitation of the article is that
all of the research was exclusively conducted in large city hospitals.

Barnard, W.A. & Benn, M.S. (2016). ‘Chocolate consumption associated with
lower risk of cognitive decline.’ Journal of Social Psychology, 128, 125‐134.
Cocoa and chocolate products have been claimed to have a number of health
benefits, including on cognitive health. The authors explored the relationship
between cognitive decline and chocolate consumption among 309 older
people. The Frequent Food Questionnaire was used to determine
consumption of chocolate bars, snacks and cocoa powder over a year prior to
baseline. The mini‐mental state examination (MMSE) tool was used to
determine cognitive function, including measure of attention, recall and
language. It was found that one third of participants experienced some
cognitive decline (defined as a decrease of 2 or less in MMSE score), but very
few reached levels of cognitive impairment (decrease of more than 2 points in
MMSE score).
